How to use cost tags in Farm Focus

What are cost tags?

Cost tags track costs and expenditures. They help you monitor specific activities, such as a wool shed extension. You can allocate cost tags to actual or planned expense items and view them in the Actuals and Planning screens and reports.

Cost tags work with any category or extended code that has the Type set to Expense. However, they cannot be used for livestock codes because these include an income component.

You can create as many cost tags as needed, but keeping them simple is best. If you have over 100 tags, it can become difficult to manage.

When to use cost tags

Cost tags can be used for:

• Short-term projects, such as development work (e.g. an irrigation system upgrade).

• Long-term tracking, like separating animal health and breeding costs for sheep and beef.

Example scenario

Dave and Sarah are installing an irrigation system on their farm. They want to track all related costs, from consent and design to installation. They also want to monitor animal health and breeding expenses for their sheep. To do this, they create cost tags for each project.

How to create a cost tag

1. Click Settings.

2. Select Tags from the menu.

3. Click either  + Add your first Cost tag or + Add Cost tag.

4. Enter the details for your cost tag, including a name, short name (ID), and description.

5. Click Save.

Managing cost tags

Once a cost tag has been used in a transaction or planned item, it cannot be deleted.

Bulk editing cost tags:

• Use the tick boxes to select the cost tags you want to edit or delete.

• To select multiple tags:

  • Click the first tag, hold Shift, then click the last tag in the range.

  • Or, use the Select all tick box.

NOTE: You can bulk edit, add, or delete cost tags in the Completed screen.
